Q & A
Q. What kind of dirt can be used for production of Compressed Earth Blocks using DJ Compressed Earth Block Machines?
A. Our machines will make a good block out of almost any type of dirt. We have used dirt with as little as 20% clay and as much as 70% and produced good blocks. The optimal clay content is 30%. Cement can be added in 5-6% concentration. Polymer is also a great binding agent that will result in a long lasting brick. Polymer can be mixed in or added to the surface after construction for a sealed washable surface.
Q. How much water is needed for a strong brick?
A. Optimal water content is 5 ? 10%. Too wet and you have a soft block that has to dry before being used. Too dry and the block will fall apart. The water is what causes the clay to yield and making a solid and strong block.
Q. How about sand?
A. The clay mixes with the sand so, larger rocks decrease the shear strength of the block while increasing the compressive strength.
Q. How about straw, leaves, etc.?
A. NONE! ? Organic material will not remain compressed and will crack the brake usually immediately after forming.
